| | Orchids are the most elegant tribute
to the image of Hawaii as paradise. Cultivation of orchids in Hawaii began in
the late 19th century when the first shipment of phaleanopsis and dendrobiums
were imported from the Philippines. Today, these blossoms abound in the climatically
congenial Aloha State, the new home for hundreds of varieties from around the
globe. About 5.4 million stems, 1.8 million posts and nearly 45 million lei blossoms
are grown annually on Oahu and the Big Island of Hawaii. Dendrobiums are one of the largest genera of orchids, with 900 species
worldwide. They comprise 57% of all Hawaii-grown orchid sales, and potted varieties
contribute to over half of the state's dendrobium trade. Although hundreds of
dendrobium varieties are grown in Hawaii, most commercial crops are hybrid cultivars
produced by the University of Hawaii for the state's floral industry.
We
will send you not one, but two, fully flowering and thriving Hawaii Orchid plants
- either dendrobiums, oncidiums, or one of each. We do not give you a choice.
Because they know the best plants currently in their greenhouses, we leave the
choice of plants up to the growers. Our only stipulations are that they be of
the finest quality and that they are of two different types. After
you receive your potted Hawaii orchids, follow these simple steps to make your
plants thrive. - Place plant near window with morning or late
afternoon sun. (In summer, your plants can be placed outside in partial shade)
- Water plant twice a week as needed (do not overwater).
- Fertilize
monthly with commercial foliar orchid fertilizer.
- Keep in temperatures
from 55 - 85 degrees F. Do not expose to extreme cold.
